The Book Bower participated in the recent World Book Night on Monday April 23rd. The store was the distribution point for the boxes of books that 13 volunteers, many from the Altrusa International of Central CT chapter, took into the community and gave away to infrequent readers. These special editions of Bel Canto, Housekeeping, the Hunger Games and Peace Like a River, among the many titles prepared for this event, were printed and distributed for free in order to encourage reading. The Middletown Patch and the Middletown Press both reported on this campaign.

http://middletown.patch.com/announcements/altrusa-international-of-central-ct-participating-in-world-book-night-b31c929a#c

From Kodiak, Alaska, to Key West, Florida, in 6,000 towns and cities across America, 25,000 volunteers gave away half a million free books on one day: Monday, April 23, 2012.

World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to personally give out thousands of free, specially printed books across America. Volunteer book lovers helped promote reading by going into the community and handing out free copies of a book they love to new or light readers, reaching them especially in underserved places – and even some fun spots - in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, nursing homes, ballparks, mass transit, diners, and more.

For more information and to sign up to be a bookgiver next year please visit the World Book Night website: http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/

New, local author books have recently arrived. Stay tuned for upcoming news about book readings and signings.

To Say Goodbye, by Beth Lapin

Following her father’s disappearance when she was a child, Maia blames herself for her failed relationships. Ben questions his ability to satisfy another after he was abandoned by this wife. Introduced by their dog, Ben and Maia sense relationship potential. Can attraction for each other move them beyond limitations?

A Legend in Time andOnboard the Marauder, Books One and Two of the James Sutherland Chronicles, by Jonathan Westbrook

A Legend in Time combines action-packed adventure with the romantic allure of a Native American legend, that will entertain both male and female alike, ages young adult to adult. Regional locales highlighted in the story include the Colt factory in Hartford during its heyday, and the shores Lake Pocotopaug, a New England area populated by the Wangunk Indian tribe, and the beautiful Indian princess, Namoenee.

Onboard the Marauder brings James Sutherland and his time-traveling companions in contact with North American pirates, in the past and the future.

Campfire Chronicles, by Ann White Lombardi

A science fiction work, the story follows the travels of Alva, a nearly two hundred and four year old woman on her quest to return to the sparkling waters of her birth. Her harrowing and heartwarming journey with a small group of strangers leads them into the alien society of the future and plays a part in their destiny.

Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 pm

Toward the End of Ordinary Time

by Elizabeth MacKiernan Miel

Just nine days after September 11th, 2001 writer and artist Elizabeth MacKiernan Miel and her husband nervously decided to go ahead with a planned trip to Paris. Over the course of two weeks, the couple visited their favorite neighborhoods, museums and many, many churches. Miel, a Christian with a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, found herself filling journal after journal with reflections on war, prejudice, art, and foreign cultures. She examines honestly the impact of 9/11 on her own faith not only in God but in tolerance and pacifism:

Toward the End of Ordinary Time documents one person’s spiritual journey in the days immediately after September 11th, touching on issues that are just as relevant today.

—————————————

Elizabeth MacKiernan Miel is a writer, scholar, translator and volunteer hospital and hospice chaplain living in Middletown, Connecticut. She studied Russian language and literature at Boston University, completed an M.Phil in linguistics at Yale University and a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at the Hartford Seminary. She works part-time at Wesleyan University and serves as a lay minister at Grace Episcopal Church in Hartford, Connecticut. Her novel Ancestors Maybe was published under the name Elizabeth MacKiernan by Burning Deck Press. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous publications.

copies of the book are available at the store
